Europe will have to wait

22/05/2017

Athletic Club was not able to pull a new win in front of Atlético de Madrid as the locals beat the Basque team 3-1. The Red and Whites moved to the sevent position in the Spanish championship losing its direct access to the Europa League next season.

Real Sociedad, who tied its game in the last minute (94th) finished the matchday in the 6th position pushing Valverde's men into the background. Athletic Club will have to wait for the Spanish King's Cup winner in order to know if they'll finnally play the Europa League: something that will happen whenever FC Barcelona is the winner.

It was a bad start for Athletic and Atlético was already leading 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the match, both scored by Fernando Torres. During the second half the appearance of Iñaki Williams gave a wings to the visitors and it was precisely Williams who scored for Athletic Club, but Correa by the end of the regular time scored again for Atlético for the final 3-1.

The loss takes Athletic Club to finish the Spanish championship in the 7th position with 63 points.

One more point

Second to last match of the season for Athletic who hosted CD Leganés. Both teams in need of the win, for different reasons: Athletic Club chasing Europa League positions at Liga Santander and Leganés trying to secure its continuity in the first division of the Spanish Championship.

Despite the difference between both teams in the classification the needs from Leganés would turn the game into a new final.

Again Aduriz (14th) scored for Athletic Club early in the game getting the Basque team to half time with a minimum advantage. During the second half Leganés got more offensive going forward and Szymanowski (61st) was able to tie the match for the visitors.

With Villarreal CF and Real Sociedad's draws Athletic Club keeps the 6th position in the championship. Real Sociedad, Villarreal cf and Athletic will fight in the last matchday of the season for the 2 positions that give the right to play the Europa League next season.

Athletic Club travels to Madrid to play Atlético at the Vicente Calderón this upcoming Sunday at 4:45pm.

Bad luck in the last derby of the season

08/05/2017

Athletic Club was unlucky agains Deportivo Alavés in Mendizorroza: the Red and Whites where the culprits of the best opportunities on a very heavy going match, but were not able to score.

Valverde's men got 4 very good chances to score in the first half, but Aduriz (3 times) and Beñat, were not able to send the foot ball to Pacheco's net. It was the end of the first 45 minutes.

Athletic Club still got a great chance but Williams missed the goal. Too many chances missed by the Red and Whites during the game... And Theo would not miss for Alavés: a long corner kick was picked up by the left wing in the penalty box limits and his powerful kick went right into Kepa's net breaking the deadlock.

The Basques did not succeed to tie the match during the time left and Deportivo Alavés got the three points at home.

Athletic Club keeps the sixth positiion in the Spanish championship as Real Sociedad got only one point in Sevilla.

4th consecutive win

02/05/2017

4th consecutive win for Athletic Club who defeated Celta de Vigo (0-3) at Balaídos. The Basques cruise in this end of the Spanish Championship to keep one of the positions that gives the right to play the Europa League next season. Valverde's men have made 9 points in the last seven days and show a weekly perfect sheet face to the last month of competition.

Athletic Club had some trouble getting in control of the match but things changed after Raúl García's first goal of the night (34th). Again Raúl García scored the second for the visitors 5 minutes after the start of the second half (50th) and Mikel Rico (83rd) closed the scoreboard.

Next Athletic Club's match takes place again far from San Mamés, at Mendizorroza, against Deportivo Alavés, Sunday the 7th at noon. It is the first of the 3 upcoming 'finals' that the Basques will play.

Europe, closer

28/04/2017

New victory at San Mamés, this time against Real Betis (2-1) on a game that was more comfortable for the locals than what the scoreboard showed at the end of the match.

The match was a little tangled from the beginning: Athletic Club wanted the 3 points and Betis wanted the draw but none of them took any risks during the first minutes. But soon after the start of the second half the referee awarded a penalty to Athletic Club and Aduriz scored the first goal for the locals.

It was the moment for the visitors to take bigger risks on defense and Athletic Club took advantage of the opportunity to score its second goal (60th) thanks to Iker Muniain. But Víctor Sánchez's men managed to score 3 minutes after (Rubén Castro 63rd).

But Athletic Club's defense, lead by Aymeric Laporte, was very consistent and Real Betis was not able to score its second goal.

Third consecutive win for Valverde's men who visit Balaídos on Sunday to play Celta de Vigo.

Big step forward

25/04/2017

Athletic got a new win on a very tight game that the Basques won 0-1 thanks to a single goal scored by Raul Garcia in the match's last minute. It was a very important win face to the fight for the European positions in the Spanish championship.

It was a very tactical game with very few opportunities on both sides. Both squads were very rigorous and focused on not taking any goal from the opponent. In fact is was Eibar who had the best chances for scoring during the first half.

The second half had an identical script: both teams aknowledging on the field that they did not want to lose the game. But Escalante from the locals got a red card (55th minute) and Valverde's men took advantage of the situation being more aggressive in search of a goal. The visitors got their reward in the last minute thanks to Raúl García who picked up the ball in the goal area after Eibar's goalkeeper had rejected a foul kick from Beñat.

Second consecutive win for Athletic Club as the team stays in the 6th position in the championship. The Red and Whites host Real Betis Balompié at San Mamés on Thursday (9:30pm).

Goal party

18/04/2017

It was a goal party against Las Palmas at the new San Mamés: 2 goals for both Muniain and Aduriz and a goal for San José on Athletic Club's side, while Bigas scored the single goal for Quique Setién's team.

Valverde's men were outstanding and worked as a football machine: 2-0 for the locals only on minute 10. Las Palmas scored its only goal of the match for the 2-1, but the comeback was a mirage and soon after Aditz Aduriz scored the third goal for the locals.

Already in the second time the Guipuzcoan forward and Muniain scored their second goal each, 4th and 5th for Athletic in the game for the final 5-1. Three more points for the Red and Whites that get back to the 6th position in the championship after Real Sociedad and Eibar's losses.

Valverde's men visit SD Eibar at Ipurúa (Monday, April the 24th at 8.45pm).on what will be another important match for the European positions.

Unlucky face to the goal.

10/04/2017

After 2 consecutive wins as a visitor Athletic Club was not able to get a good result at the Estadio de la Cerámica where Valverde's men fell 3-1.

Víctor Ruiz scored the first goal for Villarreal CF but Laporte was able to tie the match right in the very next play with a great kick after corner served by Beñat. The score at the half time was 1-1.

But Bakambú was giving again the advantage to Villarreal CF scoring in the second half's first opportunity putting Ernesto Valverde's men down. Athletic Club's attempts for a come back were fruitless and even though the visitors enjoyed several good opportunities they were not able to score.

Adrián for Villarreal CF was able to score the locals' third goal (58th) for the final 3-1 at the scoreboard.

Athletic Club hosts UD Las Palmas in San Mamés this upcoming Friday, April the 14th.

Moving forward firmly

05/04/2017

Athletic Club beated RCD Espanyol 2-0 with 2 goals from Aritz Aduriz walks towards its goal: the Europa League, for next season.

With another win against a direct rival in the Spanish Championship the Basques prove that San Mamés is one of the most difficult stadiums in La Liga and they get back their good vibe at home for the month of April. Aduriz, who surpassed the 100 goals with Athletic Club past week, scored 2 more goals before halftime keeping his good streak. Valverde's men had enough opportunities for a bigger score but were unlucky face to Diego López's goal.

Aymeric and his team mates have an important fixture this upcoming Friday against a contender for the European positions in La Liga: Villarreal CF. The yellow submarine is 5th in the table only 1 point ahead of Athletic Club, classed 6th with 50 points.
